Wirra Wirra is a place that has inspired the most lateral of thinkers. The winery itself is a testament to some quirky ideas and inspired traditions, all of which have come from the freedom to explore possibilities. Meaning ‘Among the Gum Trees’ in Aboriginal, Wirra Wirra was first founded in 1894 and is famous for its outlandish ideas and sense of humour, but its dedication to making outstanding wines comes before all else. Superlative McLaren Vale Shiraz, and elegant high altitude whites have earned it an enviable reputation in the business.
Australian truffles are the same variety as the European black winter truffle - tuber melanosporum. However they have a subtly different flavour, often described as slightly "fruitier" than their European equivalent. They have been one of the biggest gastronomic sensations of recent years. In the words of Heston Blumenthal, "...they're absolutely fantastic ... we bought more truffles from Western Australia than we did from Périgord in France ... they're better, more consistent..."
The Australian winter truffle season exactly mirrors the season in Europe, with fresh truffles available during June, July and August. This enables creative and forward-thinking chefs to have top quality truffles available during the European summer, creating the opportunity to pair the wonderful intoxicating flavours of the Winter truffle with fresh, vibrant European summer ingredients.
The evening will be hosted by Mark Shelton from Boisdale and Carolyn Sharp from Gonzalez Byass.
